Police officer suspected to be armed robber arrested

Suhum, Nov. 11, GNA – A police constable suspected to be among three armed robbers, who attacked a private medical practitioner at Suhum, Dr Nartey Marbel at his clinic and robbed him of six million cedis has been arrested.

The suspected armed robber was identified as Constable G. Ofei of the Ghana Police Service, Accra and also a bodyguard to a High Court Judge.

A Police spokesman told the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday that on October 11, Constable Ofei, who is now in police cells at Koforidua, and the two other suspects, dressed in police uniforms and attacked Dr Marbel with AK 47 raffle and demanded 10 million cedis from him or be killed.

He said Dr Marbel for fear of been killed, pleaded with the armed robbers who reduced the demand to six million cedis. He said to this end, Dr Marbel asked one of his nurses, Mr Haruna to give them the six million cedis after which they bolted in a waiting taxi.

The spokesman said, on October 31, this year, Constable Ofei visited a girlfriend in the house of Haruna at Suhum-Niifio suburb, where he was identified and arrested with the support of other friends. When Constable Ofei was searched, a pistol with life ammunition was found on him.
