Police officer shoots man over motorbike registration

A police officer, yet to be named, has shot a civilian at Wa in the Upper East region for riding an unregistered motorbike.

According to an eye witness, the victim, Ali Rashid, who was riding with his brother got to the main traffic light at Wa where two police officers, also on another motorbike, tried to remove the key of their motorbike because it had no registration number.

The victim who was sitting at the back held the hand of the police officer preventing him from taking the key, and got down in other to plead with him to allow them go. Upon getting down, the officer allegedly started beating him without any provocation. Bystanders tried to intervene but the officer who would not listen subsequently opened fire on his victim.

The other officer who was with him reportedly expressed dismay at his colleague’s action.

The victim was rushed to the Upper West regional hospital for treatment and has since been there.

Addressing the media on the issue, the Upper West regional minister Alhassan Suleiman said the matter will be investigation properly and justice served.
