Police officer is indiscipline leads to environmental degradation

Hohoe (V/R), Nov 18, GNA – Mr Kofi Duku Arthur, Volta Regional Commander of Police, said on Tuesday that the problem with the environment in Ghana is indiscipline and not inadequate regulations, policies or organisational management.

He therefore, appealed to security agencies to help in the crusade against indiscipline that affect utilisation of natural resources.

Addressing 30 participants drawn from security agencies in the Volta Region, Mr Arthur said there is the need to tackle problems of the environmental degradation in a peaceful, pragmatic and commendable manner with the relevant agencies.

He mentioned the Wildlife Society, Environmental Protection Agency, Wildlife Division of the Forestry Services Division and the Conservation International as organisations that should help tackle environmental degradation.

Mr Arthur said relevant policies and legislations have been established for ministries and institutions to help manage the environment in a sustainable manner.

He called for full support of the security agencies to address problems related to the environment.

“Much as bush-meat provide high level of protein, it is necessary to ensure that the legislation and regulations are enforced to regulate the activities of bush-meat traders, hunters and exporters of endangered species to prevent over exploitation,” he said.

Dr Erasmus H. Owusu, Director of Conservation Programme of the Ghana Wildlife Society (GWS), urged the security agencies to collaborate with organisations that protect the forest and wildlife.
