Police invite U/E NPP over polling station guards

Police in the Upper East Region have invited executives of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the region for questioning.

The invitation is in connection with the Party’s inauguration of a group called Polling Station Guards, to keep watch over proceedings at polling stations on Election Day in 2016.

The Upper East Regional Police Command says the executives, prior to the inauguration of the guards, told them they were going on a float.

Upper East Police Public Relations Officer ASP Thomas Agbenyo told Starr News in an interview that the police were deceived.

“They brought a letter that they wanted to make a float…last week, I think Friday. They wanted to make a float. So we haven’t even responded to it finally and the float really turned into a different thing. We never say any float.

“It was like a regional meeting they had and they were in discussion about polling station issues: how they could secure the ballot box or whatever it is,” ASP Agbenyo said.

“In fact they call the group Dasoya group and that they are bent on making sure that the ballot box is well protected or whatever no matter how, if they will even give their life to that, and I think that was what we heard this morning when they were discussing it on air,” Asp Agbenyo stated, adding that: “The leadership of the party in the region has been invited for questioning.”

He said the Regional Commander has invited the party’s Regional Chairman for a discussion but “unfortunately he said he was on his way going to Accra.”

“We called the secretary too, he too said he was going to Bawku.”

ASP Agbenyo said the Police will try to get the party to get some answers on why they did what they did.

“A float…turning into a different issue, which we haven’t seen before. In other words no policeman was at the scene, that’s what I’m trying to say.”
