Police destroys quantities of Indian hemp

Following an order by a Techiman Circuit Court, the Wenchi Divisional Police Command on Wednesday destroyed quantities of Indian hemp at the Nkosia land fill site in the Municipality.

The command, has earlier, sought the order from the court presided by Daniel Obeng for the destruction of the 100 bags it seized from 12 suspects.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kwadwo Djan-Kyere, Wenchi Divisional Police Commander, some of the suspects had been prosecuted, while others could not be traced.

He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), that after the destruction exercise, which was witnessed by representatives from the Bureau of National Investigations, Environmental Protection Agency, Judiciary, Municipal Assembly and the sanitation unit of the assembly the cannabis were impounded between 1998 – 2010.

ACP Djan-Kyere regretted that Indian hemp smoking and peddling was very high among the youth at Banda-Ahenkro, Wenchi, Nsawkaw and other areas in Atebubu/Amantin and Sene East districts of the region.

He said the police had intensified patrol to arrest dealers of the stuff, and warned that the perpetrators would be prosecuted if arrested.
