The Ghana Police Service has bemoaned the conduct of instant justice meted out to individuals suspected to be criminals and has cautioned the public to desist from the act.
A press release signed by Director of Public Affairs Superintendent Cephas Arthur stated: “One of such cases is an incident where a lady alleged to have stolen something at Kejetia-Kumasi, was caught, stripped naked and brutally assaulted by a mob.”
The released warned that persons who engage in such acts “may themselves be committing crimes such as assault and murder, where the victim dies, and are liable for prosecution”.
The release emphasised that no one is deemed guilty of any offence until proven guilty by a competent court of jurisdiction, hence all suspected criminal cases should be reported to the police.
The police indicated that they were employing modern technology including cameras to arrest and prosecute all persons who take the law into their own hands.
The law enforcement agency is urging members of the public who chance on such scenes to report to the police on MTN and Vodafone short-code 18555 or 191 on all networks for prompt response.
