Police Commit Major Blunder

Police in Accra is being blamed for killing four members of the Taifa neighbourhood watchdog committee and not the armed robbers as had been reported. Residents of Taifa where the alleged armed robbers were shot at and killed by the police patrol team told JOY FM that the police rather shot and killed members of the neighbourhood watchdog committee.

One resident told JOY FM that the members of the watchdog committee had gone to the rescue of the woman whose house came under attack from the robbers when the police patrol team arrived and starting shooting indiscriminately. He says in the process the Chairman of committee, Nana Kwabena Asante and three others were killed. Wife of the deceased neighbourhood committee chairman, Nana Yaa corroborated the story in an interview with JOY FM.

Greater Regional Police Commander Dr. K. K. Manfo says the police have received similar complaints from residents in Taifa. But he noted that the patrol team fired at the supposed watchdog committee members because they refused to stop when they were asked to do and fired at the police. The residents have vowed to pursue the matter and ensure that justice is done and the perpetrators brought to book.
