Tamale (NR), Sept. 27, GNA – The Northern Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Angwubutoge Awuni, said adequate security measures had been put in place at Chereponi, to ensure peaceful parliamentary bye- election in the constituency. He said the regional command want to avoid a repeat of the turmoil that characterized the parliamentary re-run in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region.
ACP Awuni told the Ghana News Agency in Tamale at the weekend that he was willing to sacrifice his position should any mayhem occur at the place.
He said the 150 police personnel on duty in the town would be beefed up with more than 1,000 police reinforcement from the Brong Ahafo Region.
ACP Awuni said additional number of policemen would also be posted from other regions, whilst military personnel would also be on the ground.
He said at least 10 policemen would be stationed at every polling station to bay off potential trouble makers. The regional commander said robust security measures were needed to restore public confidence in the country’s electoral process, which came under fire at Akwatia.
ACP Awuni warned that potential trouble makers at Chereponi would be swiftly dealt with. Touching on the security situation in the Northern Region, ACP Awuni noted that considerable efforts have been made to consolidate the peace building measures and for the people to appreciate the fact that “violence does not pay”.
He said there was a strong current in favour of peaceful co-existence contrary to the negative perception about the people. ACP Awuni enlisted the support of all well-meaning Ghanaians in building a durable peace to ensure the growth of the country. 27 Sept. 09
