Police clash with KTI students:15 hospitalised, 48 arrested

A total of 15 students of the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) are on admission at Ahwiemu Hospital, a private hospital in Kumasi following a clash between the students and the police Tuesday night.

Dozens were injured when the police swooped on the KTI campus after the students reportedly blocked the road leading to the school causing traffic.

The students were celebrating their qualification to Super Zonals after placing 4th at the INTERCO.

A teacher who spoke on Abusua Nkomo said the police entered the students dormitories and started beating some of the students who were not even present at the Baba Yara sports stadium at the time of the clash.

There was a stand off between the police and the students on Tuesday night when the latter blocked the road in front of the school and prevented other cars from using the road.

An attempt by the police to disperse the students was met with resistance from the students who threw stones at them.

The police explained after calling for reinforcement, they fired tear gas to disperse the students and chased them back to their campus.

The teacher went on to allege that the police brutalised the students and later arrested some of them.

Abusua Fm’s reporter Osei Kwadwo who visited the school this morning said 15 students who sustained various degree of injuries are currently on admission receiving treatment at Ahwiemu Hospital.

The Ashanti Regional police Public Relations Officer, Mr Tanko Yussif, told Abusua Nkomo on Wednesday that the police were forced to use tear gas to disperse and arrest the students when the students threw stones at police and refused to move the barricade on the road in front of the school.

According to him, some policemen sustained injuries in the stand off and two vehicles belonging to the police were vandalised.

Osei Kwadwo went on to report that minister of Education Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh who visited students of the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) has left the school premises to visit the students who are on admission and receiving treatment at the Hospital.
