Accra, March 27, GNA- The Police is to mount over-speeding checks on some of the major roads to reduce fatal accidents on these roads. Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr Victor Tandoh, Commanding Officer of the Motor Transport and Traffic Union (MTTU) told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Accra on Saturday, that the roads are Accra-Dodowa, Accra- Winneba, and Accra- Nsawam.
He said between January 1st to the end of February this year, 190 vehicles were arrested for over-speeding.
Mr Tandoh said a total of 173 cars involved in over-speeding were private while 17 were commercial with only four female drivers. He said the state earned 47 million cedis as fines imposed by the courts.
Mr Tandoh said between January 1 and the end of February, this year, 684 drivers were arrested for various motor traffic offences including driving through red light, dangerous driving, driving at pedestrian alleys and causing road obstruction.
He said a total of 675 of the offenders were put before court, 635 of them were fined a total of 153 million cedis, while rest were cautioned and discharged.
He said police in an exercise to clamp down drivers who neglect traffic light signs, arrested 504 offenders with 405 being private cars, commercial cars 96 while 36 of them were female.
Mr Tandoh said a total of 1,206 drivers were convicted at the beginning of this year with a total over 300 million cedis accruing from fines imposed on them.
