Police brutality: KTI students opt out of Superzonals

Organiser of old students association of the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) Hayford Emmanuel Clarke has hinted that the athletes and student body of the school will not be participating in the upcoming Super Zonal athletics competitions at Baba Yara Sports stadium in Kumasi.

According to him, the school has opted out of the competition scheduled February 23-24, 2017.

Students of the school were brutally assaulted by police after they blocked road, pelted stones and smashed police patrol cars after winning Inter schools and colleges competition (Interco).

Speaking with Kwame Adinkra on Abusua FM’s Abusua Nkommo, Mr Clarke indicated that the decision is to help prevent future occurrence of the assault.

He cautioned that any students who goes to the stadium to engage in any mayhem does so at his/her own risk.

‘We have learnt our lessons, that you only have to be careful when dealing with the security forces, some of the students may be tempted to tease competing students if there is a loss and it can generate into problems when they go to the stadium. So teachers, old students and Parents Teacher Association (PTA) took this decision yesterday to opt out and be part of the competition next year,’ he said.

The organiser of the old students association of KTI indicated that a decision is being taken as to whether to allow the athletes compete in the competition by representing the school without the students body or not.

He dispelled allegations that students of KTI are tagged as ‘stubborn’ as speculated by a section of the public.
