Police asked to intensify highway patrols

Kumasi, July 2, GNA- Mr Sumaila Boachie, Chairman of the Kumasi-Elubo-Takoradi branch of the Ghana private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), has called on the police to intensify highway night patrols to make the country’s roads save for traders and travellers to facilitate economic activities. He expressed regret about recent incidence of armed robbery attacks on some commercial vehicles in the country, and urged the security agencies to work hard to prevent such occurrences.

Mr Boachie in an interview with the GNA on Saturday said: “Admittedly, nobody could refuse to recognise the good job the security agencies were doing to bring down the wave of armed robbery. But Ghanaians would like the security agencies to pursue and totally subdued the criminals”. He called on the public to support the police to fight armed robbery by providing them with vital information that could lead to the arrest of the robbers.

Mr Boachie said: “It is for this reason that passengers should be more alert and report passengers whose behaviour whilst on board vehicles give cause for suspicion the police at barriers”. He observed that armed robbers at times joined long-distance travelling vehicles pass on information to their accomplices to strike via mobile phones. The GPRTU Branch Chairman asked drivers to be disciplined and to obey traffic regulations to prevent accidents on the roads and warned that the Union would not shield drivers found driving carelessly.
