Police asked to arrest Osu cemetery wee smokers

Accra, Jan 13, GNA – Alhaji Ahmed Annan, Sexton in charge of Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) cemeteries, has called on the Police to arrest a gang of Indian hemp smokers, who operate at the Osu cemetery. He said people who stay near the cemetery have complained about robberies and snatching of mobile phones and bags by criminals, who often take refuge in the cemetery after committing crimes.

Alhaji Annan in an interview with GNA on Tuesday said some criminals looted graves while others posed as grave diggers or AMA staff and direct mourners to bury their dead at wrong places.

Dr Simpson Anim Boateng, Director of Metropolita n Public Health, confirmed the illegal activities at the cemetery to GNA. He said “following persistent reports about wee smoking at some cemeteries and attacks on residents at nights, I reported the matter to the Police.”

Dr Boateng said attempts to prevent criminal actives at cemeteries had failed and officers in charge of the cemeteries were threatened. The Director of Public Health said he would contact the AMA Works Department to consider raising or building fence walls around cemeteries in the metropolis. 13 Jan 10
