Police arrests a hit and run driver

Sekondi, Jan. 04, GNA – The Western Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of Ghana Police Service on Monday January 1, arrested a hit and run driver for failing to report an accident.

Briefing Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Sekondi on Thursday, Police Superintendent Adusa Poku and MTTU Commander, said the suspect, Issifu Mohammed 36, driving a Kia Sportage at 1930 hours on December 23, knocked Reverend Francis Namoah 37, Minister in-charge of Essipong Rhema Church at Mapees Junction near Skyy Power FM station at Fijai. Superintendent Poku said after the accident, the suspect failed to assist the victim and in addition failed to report to the Police and went into hiding.

He said eyewitnesses reported the accident to the Police when the victim was declared dead on arrival at Effia Nkwanta Hospital. Superintendent Poku said the deceased was seeing his colleague Pastor Bernard Andoh who was in-charge of Sekondi Branch of the church off by the road when the accident occurred.

He said a joint search by the Police and members of the church led to the arrest of the suspect.

Superintendent Poku said a damaged windscreen; traffic indicator and a radio pole which were destroyed from the impact were quickly replaced while a dent on the vehicle was re-sprayed.

He said the suspect later parked the vehicle near his house at Effiakuma and went into hiding, but the Police was informed and took the vehicle to the MTTU yard where the owner, Uncle Eddie of Stool Lands Commission was arrested.

The MTTU Commander said Uncle Eddie told the Police that he sent the vehicle to the suspect for maintenance and had no idea that the vehicle had been involved in an accident three days later. He said the suspect would be prosecuted after investigations. 04 Jan. 07
