Kumasi, April 10, GNA – The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested two persons suspected to be involved in the murder of Mr Samuel Ennin, former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).
They are Sheriff Kabore and Kwame Ayew, both 27 years of age. The third accomplice, one Joshua is still at large.
Sheriff, alias 93Baaba” who is believed to be the key suspect in the murder case was arrested on March 29 2007 in a Tamale bound vehicle in Kumasi, while Kwame Ayew alias “Red”, whom the Police had earlier on suspected to be behind the crime was arrested at Gbenliga, near Sandema in the Upper East Region.
Briefing the media in Kumasi on Tuesday, DCOP Frank Adu Poku, Ashanti Regional Police Commander, said all circumstantial and indirect evidence pointed to the fact that the two and their accomplices were behind the gruesome murder.
He, however, stated that, the Police investigations did not reveal any other motive behind the murder other than robbery, adding that, the late Mr Ennin was a victim of armed robbery.
Narrating the circumstances leading to the arrest of the suspects, Mr Adu Poku said on February 24 2007, Ayew who had been involved in a series of armed robbery cases was arrested at his hideout at Sandema. The Police retrieved two pump action guns, 24 life cartridges, military cap and bag, a hook and other items from him.
Mr Adu Poku said during interrogation, Ayew admitted having taken part in previous robberies and mentioned Sheriff and Joshua as his accomplices.
Ayew, however, denied his involvement in the murder case but mentioned the names of Sheriff and Joshua.
Mr Adu Poku said Ayew, therefore, led the Police to Sheriff’s house at Moshie zongo, a suburb of Kumasi, but he was able to escape. The Regional Commander said on March 29, 2007, Sheriff was arrested in connection with a different robbery case in a Tamale bound vehicle in Kumasi.
He said on April 2, 2007, the Asawase Police in the course of their investigations into the murder case, invited one Stephen Amoah and Mary Addai, who were both victims of the incident that occurred at the Liberal World Spot at Pankrono Estates in Kumasi on February 9, 2007. He said immediately the victims heard the voice of Sheriff at the Police station, they readily identified him as one of the assailants. The Commander said Sheriff was, therefore, put before a team of investigators for interrogation, but he denied being involved in the murder.
However, the victims, who were also invited by the investigators, insisted that, he was among the gang and identified him by the shape of his structure, voice, the military cap and other items which had already been retrieved by the Police from Ayew in his hideout at Sandema. Mr Adu Poku said Ayew had already been sentenced to 21 years’ imprisonment by a court in Kumasi in connection with a previous robbery case while Sheriff had also been remanded in Police custody by a Kumasi Circuit Court to reappear on April 24, 2007.
He said from evidence gathered so far from investigations, the Police had a firm conviction that the two suspects were behind the murder, adding; 93the Police has no loopholes in the investigations at all”. Mr Adu Poku thanked the team of police investigators for their hard work and dedication in-spite of all odds.
He also thanked the media for showing greater interest in the case and asked them to always help the Police to get rid of criminals from the society. 09 April 07
