Police arrest hundreds of motor bikes in Tamale

The police in the Tamale metropolis, in collaboration with the National Road Safety Commission and other security agencies on Wednesday arrested people riding motorbikes without helmets.

They also arrested tri-cycles and vehicles that were without requisite registration numbers.

Mr. Ayatah Alexander Atiibo, Regional Manager for the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), told journalists that motor riders and other motorists have been abusing the law in the metropolis for far too long resulting in needless deaths.

He said due to riding motor bikes without helmets, 40 deaths were recorded this year and expressed worry that urgent steps such as prosecuting persons was the best way to curb the carnage.

Mr. Atiibo said the exercise would soon be extended to vehicles especially tipper trucks without license, insurance and road worthy certificates.

He said prior to the exercise, public education and consultation was done at churches, mosques and markets and that nobody should blame the security services for the exercise.
