Police arrest 10 for rioting

Kwesiminstim (W/R) Sept. 19, GNA – The Kwesiminstim Police last week-end arrested 10 people for rioting and unlawful exhumation of a corpse at the Apremdo public cemetery.

A police source told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that during the evening of September 13, this year, relatives of Nana Nware Eziah, II, Gyaasehene of Apremdo buried Lawrence Tandoh 10, but were attacked by the youth who suspected a foul play in the boy’s death.

The source said the youth vandalised, a Toyota Pickup used by the mourners, those burying the corpse fled and the youth exhumed the body and kept vigil with it until the following day.

It said the youth also attacked the Police who went to the cemetery to convey the corpse to the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital for autopsy but they managed to take the corpse away.

According to the source, the deceased who had been sick for a long time at a prayer camp in the Central region died after several medical interventions had failed.

The source said the deceased was related to Awulae Blay, a Paramount chief of Eastern Nzema who was married to Nana Eziah. It said because of the marriage the relatives decided to bury the corpse at Apremdo but the youth suspected that the boy was murdered for ritual purposes. The source did not name the suspects but said they would appear before court after police investigations had been completed.
