PNC salutes AU

Accra, May 25, GNA- The People’s National Convention (PNC) on Wednesday used the African Union (AU) Day celebrations, to congratulate the late Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah and other African leaders for their pioneering role in the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), 42 years ago.

A statement signed by Mr Gabriel Pwamang, General Secretary of the PNC said: “We also commend the African Heads of State who met in Libya in 2002 and decided to advance the march of African patriots towards total unity by the formation of the Africa Union”.

“We acknowledge the invaluable contribution of the Libyan Leader Muammar Al Gaddafi in ensuring this transformation of the OAU to the AU”, the statement said.

The PNC reminded the current African political leadership that the AU still fell short of the United States of Africa that Dr Nkrumah advocated.

It said: “We as a political party maintain that the argument for a closer union was still valid today as it was at the time of the formation of the OAU in 1963”.

The Party called on African leaders to dedicate themselves to a closer Union of African States.

The PNC expressed regret that Africans were still being treated inhumanly and like enemies in other sister African countries. The PNC said, “We recognise that reactionary forces oppose to the Unity of African peoples continue to divide us and this calls for greater civil society cooperation across Africa to deepen the unity. “We call on all African governments to promote internal reforms for the realisation of the spirit and letter of the statutes of the African Union”, the statement said.
