PNC Congress Underway

The National Delegates Congress of the Peoples National Convention (PNC) is on going at the trade fair centre in Accra today(Saturday). Delegates to the congress will be electing a presidential candidate and national executives for the party.

The congress will also make some amendments to the party?s constitution.

The election of the flag bearer is expected to over shadow other activities at the congress.

The Party?s current leader and Presidential candidate in both the 1996 and 2000 elections, Dr. Edward Mahama is contesting the position with businessman and former NPP member, Kofi Wayo.

Kofi Wayo defected from the NPP a few months ago.

The congress is being held despite a petition sent to the Electoral commission by the former National vice-chairman of the party, Mallam Isa.

Mallam, the jailed former minister for youth and sports, says the party has not held elections in its regional offices for the past five years as such there are no qualified delegates to vote at Saturday?s congress.

But the party?s leadership has dismissed Mallam Isa?s argument.

The election of the flag bearer is expected to start after 16:00 GMT.
