PLWHAs harvest maize from five-acre farm in Koforidua

Koforidua, Aug. 4, GNA – Some 60 persons living with HIV/AIDS under the care of ‘Matthew Chapter 25 House’, a Koforidua-based Catholic charity for PLWHAs, have begun harvesting maize from their five-acre farm located in the town.

They were being assisted by student volunteers. The Director of the House, Rev. Father Alex Bobby Benson, told journalists that the farm was cultivated on land earmarked for a multi-million-cedi village complex for the care of PLWHAs in the region.

According to him, work on the village complex, housing a hospice, hostels and a workshop for income-generation trades, will begin next year.

Rev Bobby Benson said currently, PLWHAs were engaged in income-generating ventures such as batik tye-and-dye, palm oil processing and funeral undertaking. He said even though the House was heavily supported by donors and philanthropists, the farm was established to make it self-sufficient in the food requirement of the PLWHAs.
