Awutu-Bawjiase(C/R), June 10, GNA – A total of 5,484 Children in 40 Plan Ghana-assisted basic schools in the Central and part of the Greater Accra Regions have had their eyes screened in a special programme initiated by the organization last month. It was executed by the Awutu-Bawjiase Programme Area office of the organisation with the help of a medical team from the Central Regional Hospital at Cape Coast.
Mr. Benjamin Akuamoa-Boateng, an official of the Bawjiase office said the exercise formed part of Plan Ghana’s School Health Education Programme (SHEP) designed to improve the health of school children in communities that the organisation was operating in. Of the 5,484 children, 391 were found to have developed various eye problems.
Mr. Akuamoa-Boateng said some were given prescription to procure drugs, while those with cataract and other ailments were referred for further medical attention. Mr Akuamoa-Boasteng a School Health Education Programme Assistant, praised teachers and school children in the schools the team visited for their co-operation.
Mrs Amelia Allan, Bawjiase Program Area Manager of Plan, on behalf of the Directors of the organization, expressed her appreciation to the Central Regional Directorate of the Ghana Health Services (GHS) for their support.
