Pit caves in; 14 illegal miners trapped

The Nsuta District Police Commander, Superintendent Atsu Dzinaku has disclosed that 14 illegal miners have been trapped in a mine at Prestea-Nsuta in the Western Region.

The Miners according to him are believed to have been trapped since yesterday after a heavy downpour in the area.

Disclosing this sad development on Accra-based Joy FM, the Police Commander said the miners were nineteen in number but only five of them were able to successfully come out of the collapsed pit.

Superintendent Dzinaku indicated that rescue efforts are underway adding that the Police are currently interrogating two of the individuals who were able to successfully walk out of the pit in order to help identify individuals stuck in there and help rescue.

The Commander could not tell if the 800 meters pit was an illegal mining site but indicated that the place is a small scale mining site.

He indicated that his men are on a hunt for owners of the pit to assist them in their investigations.
