Pioneer Food Cannery shut down after fire kills two

Two people have been confirmed dead in the fire that gutted the Pioneer Food Cannery Company at Tema on Sunday.

Four people who also sustained severe injuries are receiving treatment at various hospitals.

According to reports, maintenance work being carried out within the premises triggered the fire outbreak.

The food processing company has been temporary closed down for investigations to be conducted.

Mr. Timothy Osafo, deputy Fire Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service in Tema told Starr Today that workers of the company were carrying out heat work activity without the supervision of any senior officer.

“We are yet to conduct further probe into the incident to find out if other factors contributed to the fire outbreak but as at this moment I can only confirm that the fire boiling system has completely been destroyed by the fire,” Mr. Osafo said.

He added that barely a week ago, personnel of the Ghana Fire Service had gone round the premises of the Pioneer Food Cannery to ensure that they went about their activity safely.
