Accra, Dec. 22, GNA – Police on Monday halted the proposed picket of the state bungalow of Mr Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, former Minister of Tourism, by the Ga Youth for the Advancement of Justice and Democracy because the group did not obtain Police permit.
The group and media personnel had convened at the Ridge residence of the former Minister at about 0900 hours for the picket, when the Greater Accra Regional Police command came in to stop it.
In an interview with GNA, Chief Superintendent Christian Tetteh-Yohuno of Accra Police Command said they had not been notified by the leadership of the group of the picket.
He said they only received a call from Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey that certain people had convened in front of his residence and were trying to force their way into his compound.
“The police do not have a problem with the group holding a picket, but they cannot do it in someone’s residence because it contravenes the Public Order Act,” Chief Superintendent Tetteh-Yohuno said. Mr Herbert Nii Akai Nettey, President of the group, said they respected the decision of the Police and would go back and dialogue with them.
The Ga Youth for the Advancement of Justice and Democracy last week set out demands for government to address, in respect to the proposed purchase of a state bungalow by the former Minister. The demands include a halt to the proposed sale of the property and a call on Mr Obestebi-Lamptey to pull out of the deal and vacate the property since he is no longer a serving Minister. 22 Dec. 08
