A 22-year old pick-pocket, who snatched the school fees of a newly admitted student at the Kajetia Lorry Terminal, has been sentenced to three years imprisonment with hard labour by a Kumasi Circuit Court. Akwasi Poku pleaded guilty to the crime.
His accomplice, known only as “Taller” is, however, on the run.
Police Chief Inspector Isaac Mensah Appenteng told the court that the student, David Owusu, who had gained admission into the Kumasi Anglican Senior High School (SHS), was given GH¢500.00 on November 2, by the parents to pay his fees.
He could not reach the school on time as officials to receive the money had closed and was therefore asked to come the next day.
The prosecution said the student returned to the lorry terminal to join a vehicle back home.
There, Poku with his run-away accomplice, removed the money from Owusu’s pocket and took to their heels.
The victim would not give up and chased after them. His courage paid-off as he managed to arrest the convict with the help of others, but “Taller” escaped.
He was handed over to the Police and in his caution statement admitted the offence.
