The second phase of the on-going biometric voter registration exercise has so far been smooth and peaceful in Kumasi with the absence of scenes of anxiety and confusion as witnessed during the first phase in some centres.
This comes amidst strong warning by the police to deal firmly and ruthlessly with thugs out there to cause confusion; as applicants at places visited by the GNA were seen waiting patiently and calmly in queues to go through the process.
Turn-out, however, appears to be relatively low in many of the areas and two centres in the Asokwa Constituency for example had between them registered 136 applicants as of Wednesday at 0945 hours.
Another centre, Queen’s Hospital, had registered 167 voters whiles a total of 113 applicants had been registered at the New Oxford JHS Centre “A” at Afful-Nkwanta in the Subin Constituency by 10 am.
At the Pankrono Estate Roman Catholic Church centre, in the Tafo-Pankrono Constituency, the registration officer, Mr Alex Frimpong, complained about frequent breakdown of the registration machines which he said was a major worry.
The Old-Tafo Pentecost Life centre had registered 125 people while the Assemblies of God centre had issued voter ID cards to 130 applicants.**
