Persons with Disability Bill passed

Accra, June 23, GNA – Parliament on Friday passed the Persons with Disability (PWD) Bill. The bill is aimed at enabling PWDs to enjoy rights enshrined in the Constitution (Article 29 (8)) with the view to improving their living standards and mainstreaming their activities.

The Bill provides PWDs with accessibility to public places, employment, transportation, free, general and specialist medical care. The passage of the bill would lead to the creation of PWD desks at the various employment centres nationwide and also bring into being the National Council on Persons With Disability, which would oversee the implementation of some of the national programmes aimed at PWDs. The bill has a transitional provision, which provides for a 10-year moratorium because of the massive investment needed to make all existing public building disability-friendly.
