The Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District in the Northern Region, has received an amount of GH¢48,398.97 from the Disability Fund for the empowerment of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the district.
Mr. Mumuni Isaac Dramani, the District Chief Executive (DCE), who disclosed this during the Assembly’s second ordinary meeting at Sawla on Saturday, stated that GH¢31,855.00 had been spent on the beneficiaries so far.
The amount was spent on registration of PWDs under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), payment of school fees of PWDs, medical bills, capacity building in ICT, administrative work as well as income generating activities.
The DCE announced that the World Food Programme under its Food for Work Programme collaborated with the Assembly to assist 13 communities with implements to rehabilitate their dams for an enhanced food production through irrigation.
He said the first batch of food items comprising 3,110 bags of maize, 310 bags of beans, 310 cartons of oil and 80 bags of salt had already been distributed to some beneficiary communities.
Mr. Dramani said the second consignment of 4,010 bags of maize, 439 bags of beans, 339 cartons of oil and 140 bags of salt would soon be distributed.
He also informed the house that the district had been considered to benefit from the National Ambulance Service Center and a Fire Service Station, adding that the Assembly had already taken delivery of one ambulance and members of the crew already undergoing training to kick start the service in the district.
The DCE added that the Police in the district had also been given two police vans to facilitate their work, adding that the district had also been allocated a Metro Mass bus to ply Sawla Tamale road with effect from 1st September, 2012.
Mr. Dramani said the government had also expanded beneficiary communities under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme, from five communities to eleven; benefiting a total number of 1,737 people.
The DCE appealed to the Assembly members to step up their efforts to enable the Assembly achieve its set targets for the year.
