Sandema (U/E) Dec. 22, GNA – Staff of the Community Protection Unit (CPU) of the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) in the Builsa District, on Monday underwent a three-day in-service training to sharpen their skills to stay professional in their operations. The participants were taken through topics such as community policing, public arrest, crime detection, police law and general police duties. The District Co-ordinator of the programme, Mr. Aloysius Anyiam said the main objective of the NYEP was to empower the youth to be able to contribute productively towards the socio-economic and sustainable development of the nation.
“This programme seeks to achieve job creation and other forms of employment,” he added.
Mr. Anyiam said since the inception of the NYEP, the active modules in the district had been the Health Extension Workers, Community Education Teachers Assistants and the CPU. He said the programme in addition had put in place new modules, which include Youth in Agri-Business, Youth in Information Communication Technology and Dress-making.
The District Co-ordinating Director, Mr. Mohammed Issahaku who spoke on behalf of the District Assembly asked the personnel to be mindful of the laws of the land in the discharge of their duties, and cautioned them to be disciplined and careful not to infringe on anybody’s rights. Mr. Issahaku urged the personnel to secure their jobs by furthering their education so that they could be enrolled into the mainstream Police Service. The Upper East Regional Co-ordinator of the NYEP, Mr. James Kopanamo Kojo asked other districts to emulate the initiative by the Builsa programme.
He said government had put in place new modules such as Youth in Ghana Prison Service and Ghana National Fire Service, which would commence next year in all districts. Mr. Kojo appealed to the personnel to exhibit a sense of discipline to enable the programme achieve its aim.
He described as untrue speculations that government is planning to lay off personnel of the programme employed during the previous regime. The District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police Isaac Tetteh asked the personnel to use the skills they have acquired effectively and display a high sense of discipline that conforms with the standards of the Ghana Police Service. 22 Dec. 09
