Awutu Beraku (C/R), May 20, GNA – Majority of people at a Consultative Constitution Review Commission durbar at Awutu have said chiefs should not take part in partisan politics because of their position as community leaders and custodians of the land.
They said if chiefs are allowed to take part in partisan politics they could lose respect and even bring division among their respective people. They also suggested that people looking for appointments as District, Municipal and Metropolitan Chief executives should be nominated from the their areas, vetted by the government and people from the constituency to vote on the contestants.
They said if the Chief Executives are elected, it could be possible that a person from a different party could win power and fail to implement the policies of the President who is from another party. Mrs Jean Mensa, Executive Director, Institute of Economic Affairs and Member of the Commission, said the public had the opportunity from August to September 2010 to make submissions.
She appealed to Ghanaians to ensure that their recommendations would collectively enhance the unity and cohesion of the nation and appealed to people to participate fully in the exercise.
