Pensioners at Esiama pick new officers

Esiama (W/R), Sept. 15, GNA – Government had been advised to evolve an efficient way of tapping the vast experiences of retired workers, as long as they remain sound in body and mind.

Retired workers must also be made to enjoy the fruits of their labour by paying them adequate pension during their lifetime. Mr John Ackatia Chie, the re-elected Secretary of the Esiama District branch of the Ghana Government Pensioners’ Association said this at a meeting on Thursday, at Esiama in the Nzema East District of the Western Region The meeting was to elect new officers to steer the affairs of the Association for a four-year term.

Mr Chie expressed regret for the many years that no arrangement had been made to tap the wealthy ideas and experiences of senior citizens, who had retired from active service for the benefit of the society. “It is disheartening to note that rich ideas and experiences of retired healthy workers are left to go waste”, he said.

The meeting also elected Mr Albert Joseph Armah, as chairman, Mr P. K. K Quarm, assistant secretary and Mr Isaiah Assan, treasurer.

Officials from the Western Regional office of the Association supervised the election, which was peaceful and orderly. In a related development, Mr J. E. K. Ackerson, 93 years, collapsed and died later at the Catholic Hospital at Eikwe after addressing the meeting.
