Pen thief caged

A magistrate court in Navrongo in the Kassena-Nankana East Municipality of the Upper East Region, has remanded a suspect, Jerry Bavisam, to police custody to reappear on September 25.

The accused and his alleged accomplice, John Yambatua – at large – have been accused of stealing two Bic pens, 30 passbooks belonging to members of the Kajelo Wewuwale Multi-Purpose Co-operative Association, one Koleda Calculator, one Fidelity Bank ATM Card, one MTN Mobile Money Sim card, two rubber bowls, two money bags, a plastic ruler, an exercise book, a rubber stamp and a stamp pad, all valued at GHc3,122.00.

According to the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Emmanuel Sampana, Jerry Bavisam and John Yambatua on August 14, robbed one Faustina Alou, the treasurer of the Kajelo Wewuwale Multi-Purpose Co-operative Association, in Paga.

The accused and his accomplice were reported to have gone to the house of Faustina Alou at about 1:30 am on a motor bike. Jerry, who was the pillion rider, entered the room where the items were and frightened the occupants and bolted with the items.

Neighbours, according to the prosecution, chased them but could not get them because the two sped into a dark area.

Knowing that there was only one way out of that dark area, the neighbours lay ambush and when the gangsters were coming, they pounced on them and management to arrest Jerry Bavisam, while his accomplice escaped.

At the court, Chief Inspector Sampana said efforts to arrest John Yambatua had proven futile, adding that the police were relying on informants from the district to help them apprehend him.

The leader of the Kajelo Wewuwale Multi-Purpose Co-operative Association, Julius Awaregya, bemoaned the traumatic situation the innocent women had been going through, as hoodlums had been robbing them of the monies they are supposed to use for their trading activities.
