Accra, June 17, GNA – Dr Kwame Ampofo, Member of Parliament for South Dayi on Saturday announced the construction of a Community Olympic stadium at Peki Senior Secondary School in the Volta region. The proposed stadium would have a football field, an athletic oval, sports hall and clinic. Other facilities include; tennis, handball, volleyball and basketball courts, a conference room and sports shop where sports equipment would be sold at affordable prices for sportsmen and women. Dr Ampofo was launching the programme of activities for the 50th Anniversary celebration of Peki Senior Secondary School (PESCO) on the theme; “Quality Education: The Bedrock of National Development.” in Accra.
PESCO formerly known as “Trans-Volta Secondary School, was built through the foresight, patriotism, sacrifice and determination of 21 Ghanaians mainly Peki citizens at Peki Avetile on February 11, 1957 as a private institution. In 1960, the Ministry of Education absorbed the school into the public system and renamed it Peki Secondary School Dr Ampofo said Peki a fast growing community with many youth could use the facility to broaden the country’s development efforts and hunt for talents in sports throughout the country. “With some of these structures in place, our athletes and boxers can get access to facilities which will help them win national and continental honours, ” He added.
The South Dayi MP noted that “Peki by virtue of its excellent geographical location and accessibility, friendly atmosphere, natural, cultural and traditional enrichment centre would offer sportsmen and women the right frame of mind to concentrate on their training to achieve better results.” Reverend Gordon Kisseh, General Overseer of Miracle Life Gospel Church, a past student, inaugurated the anniversary cloth whilst Mr Michael K. Nsowah, Acting Director General of Ghana Education Service, launched the anniversary programme. Past students of PESCO, eminent citizens of Peki, traditional rulers from Volta region, and a cross section of the public attended the launching.
Later, Dr Ampofo told the Ghana News Agency in an interview, that assistance would be sought through the Ghana Olympic Committee to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), for it to be considered under IOC’s policy of establishing such community Olympic facility in deprived communities. He disclosed that work had already begun on a site near Peki Senior Secondary School.
