UNAMSIL GHANBATT 2, comprising Ghanaian soldiers who returned from peacekeeping duties in Sierra Leone, on Monday presented 1,000 dollars to the 37 military hospital as seed money for the purchase of a dialysis machine.
The gesture was motivated by kidney complications suffered by one of the soldiers in Sierra Leone who had to be brought home. A statement from the Armed Forces Public Relations Directorate in Accra said Lieutenant Colonel G. Y. Mahama, Commanding Officer, made the presentation on behalf of the battalion.
He explained that lassa fever, an epidemic, which is predominant in some parts of West Africa, especially in the Eastern Region of that country where GHABATT operates, caused the complications.
He said that considering the price of the machine, the donation was not enough and expressed the hope that it would inspire succeeding battalions, institutions and individuals to follow suit.
Lieutenant Colonel G. E. Tamaklo, Administrative Officer of the Directorate of Medical Services, received the money on behalf of the hospital.
