Kumasi, Dec 27, GNA – The National Peace Council has advocated more responsible political campaigns as the nation prepares for the 2012 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
The Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Kwaku Asante, the Chairman of the Council, said it was imperative that party leaders brought their supporters and activists to order as to how they should behave in a matured manner before, during and after the elections to help consolidate peace and unity in the country.
“We should all be mindful of the fact that politics is not about division and enmity. As much as we may not agree with our opponents on certain issues that does not give us the audacity to insult and fight each other.”
Most Reverend Professor Asante, who is also the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana (MCG), indicated that Ghanaians had no where to run in times of crisis and that “those who intend to cause confusion should have a repentant heart.”
He was speaking at a special Christmas service at the Adum Wesley Cathedral of the Methodist Church in Kumasi.
The Presiding Bishop said it was incumbent on all and sundry to contribute meaningfully to ensuring an incident-free election for the benefit of the nation.
He cautioned the media to strive to uphold the ethics of their profession since they had a significant role to play to enhancing peace and unity in such crucial times.
Most Reverend Professor Asante advised Christians to reflect on the symbolic importance of the yuletide and resolve to re-dedicate themselves to the tenets of the Bible for their spiritual growth.
