PCP Against Celebration Of June Four

Accra, 4 June The People’s Convention Party (PCP) today expressed concern about the planned celebration of June Four Uprising saying it has no justification. In a statement issued in Accra, the party said it “sees no justification whatsoever in the celebration of an event which only reminds the nation of pain, suffering and destruction of lives and property”. The celebration, it said, is more unjustified against the background of the unacceptable high level of corruption in public offices under subsequent regimes of the PNDC and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). “While opposing the celebration of June four, we wish to extend our heartfelt sympathies to the many Ghanaian families whose dear ones were sacrificed for a cause which has been betrayed”. Meanwhile the Cocoa Industry ACDR’s has congratulated President Jerry John Rawlings and all revolutionary cadres who assisted in the execution of the uprising. A statement issued in Accra today by the Coordinating Committee for the Cocoa Industry ACDR’s said the 18th anniversary celebration of the “glorious June four” calls for a sober reflection on the philosophy in probity and accountability on the part of political office holders. “It is becoming crystal clear that some of the political office holders just take the call for probity and accountability by the President as a big joke”. The statement congratulated the President for removing over 20 District Chief Executives (DCEs) from office. It suggested the appointment of revolutionary cadres as DCEs instead of assigning Regional Ministers that responsibility saying, “there are enough revolutionary cadres who have been trained by the present leadership but are not being used”.
