Jasikan, (Volta Region), 29 Jan ’99 – The Catholic Bishop of Jasikan has advised the government not to compel the people of the “world bank” (Volta region) to impose conditionalities for the accelerated development of the region. Right Rev. Gabriel A.A. Mantey, gave the advice at Jasikan when Alhaji Seidu Iddi, Volta regional minister held two separate meetings with the chiefs, clergy, assembly members and heads of department as part of a one-day familirisation tour of the Jasikan district. Bishop Mantey said the people in the district, for instance, have waited patiently for the implementation of promises made to them but warned that “their patience is running out”. Other speakers did not hide their sentiments and were very blunt and frank in telling the Minister the feelings of the people about the under-development of the district. Bishop Mantey therefore appealed to the government to award contracts for the construction of roads from Jasikan to the Northern sector to only competent contractors, as they are mostly used by heavy trucks. Nana Aburam Akpandza the fourth, paramount chief of Buem traditional area said the chiefs should not be blamed if the people refuse to accept any further promises. Alhaji Iddi advised the people not to take any unilateral decision which will not only complicate their problems but will also be seen as self- imposed isolation. The minister pleaded with the people to exercise patience with the government to enable it tackle the numerous development problems in the district. Mr Emil Brantuo, Member of Parliament for Buem, assured the Minister of the people’s preparedness to assist in solving the district’s problems. Miss Vida Asiedua-Donkor, Jasikan district chief executive, suggested that telecommunication facilities be extended to the district to facilitate contact with other parts of the country.
