Pastor in prison for destroying election posters

Sekondi Nov.22, GNA-A Sekondi District Magistrate’s Court on Monday remanded Charles Gallow, a Pastor into prison custody for tearing into pieces the election poster of Mrs Angelina Baiden-Amissah, the Parliamentary Candidate of the New Patriotic Party for Shama.

The accused who pleaded not guilty to destroying election poster is to re-appear on December 9, 2004.

Mr Tsatu Azumah, the Presiding Magistrate, said he had remanded Gallow in custody because his conduct was not conducive to peaceful, free and fair elections on December 7.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector Jacob Kwame Siaw said the accused was arrested when he was spotted tearing the poster, which was pasted at the back of his house.

Counsel for the accused said the decision of the Court was harsh and could deprive his client the opportunity of exercising his franchise. He said he would appeal against the ruling, since the maximum sentence for the offence was a fine of 200,000 cedis.
