Past students urged to assist former schools

Agona Swedru, Jan. 28, GNA – Reverend Professor Emmanuel Addo-Obeng, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), has urged past students to contribute meaningfully to the development of their former schools. He advised students to study hard to enable them to acquire skills and knowledge needed for nation development. Prof. Addo-Obeng was speaking at the launch of the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Swedru Senior High School at Agona Swedru in the Central Region. He said that the rapid development of every country depended on its human resource base.

Prof. Addo-Obeng stressed that students should be disciplined and hard working to enable them to benefit from the huge investment being made by their parents and government in their education. Prof. Addo-Obeng said in 1958, the Ghana Cocoa Board released funds to the defunct Ghana Education Trust Fund for the building of secondary schools through out the country including the Swedru, Apam, Yaa Asantewa, Ghana National, La Bonne and Akim Oda secondary schools. He explained that the idea was to encourage the youth, especially those in the rural areas to continue their education.

Mr E K T Osam, Headmaster of Swedru Senior High School, mentioned inadequate classroom blocks, dormitories, bungalows for staff, poor roads and water system. He and appealed to individuals and organisations to assist rehabilitate the school which seemed neglected since its establishment 50 years. Mr Osam commended the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of the school for their contribution to the development of the school. Dr Glover Quartey, former Head of the Civil Service, urged the students to study hard to enable them to acquire skills and knowledge needed for national development.
