Passage of CI 78 is welcome news – EC

The Electoral Commission says the passage of the CI 78 into law today, Monday October 2, is welcome news.

The instrument gives legal backing to the creation of 45 new constituencies ahead of the December polls.

Acting Public Relations Officer of the EC, Christian Owusu Parry, told XYZ News the creation of the new constituencies will allow a fair representation of all districts in the upcoming elections

He said “we indicated the need for us to create additional constituencies so that we will not have situations where districts will not have representation in parliament, so it was an urgent matter that needed to be addressed.”

Mr Owusu Parry said it was the right of the minority and the groups who argued against the law to do so as it was national issue. He indicated that the constituencies have been demarcated already and CI 78 has breathed life into them.

Menawhile, Parliament’s Public Affairs Director, Jones Kugblenu, has told XYZ NEWS the house will make the necessary arrangements to make room for 45 more Members of Parliament once the Electoral Commission serves the Speaker with a Writ of Election.

The 230-member House will increase to 275 once the 45 newly created constituencies get legal backing today.

The new parliamentarians will be joining the sixth parliament of the Fourth republic in January next year.

Jones Kugblenu told XYZNEWS the necessary arrangements will be made to ensure that every parliamentarian is accommodated in the new Parliament.
