The District Chief Executive(DCE) for Upper West Akim , Mr Derek Ohene Bekoe has observed that partisan politics has killed the communal spirit that existed in Ghanaians some years ago, and called for a change of attitude.
He said unlike some years ago when Ghanaians would devote themselves to national clean up exercises and other activities of national interest , that spirit had dwindled over the years due to the politicization of issues of important national issues.
Mr Bekoe made the call when the Deputy Local Government Minister, Mr Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, visited the chiefs and people of the district as part of preparations towards the Eastern Region’s hosting of the 5th National Sanitation Day (NSD) exercise.
He indicated that for the environment to be clean, there was the need for all to be committed to the NSD and assured the minister of the commitment of his district to the exercise slated for Saturday.
Mr Agyekum urged the chiefs in the district to champion the upcoming exercise and appealed to them to help mobilise the people to have a successful clean-up campaign.
He explained that bad sanitation practice was as a result of indiscipline and bad attitude on the part of citizens, and called for the education of the youth on the benefits of good environmental practices.
He urged all and sundry to put an end to the creation of filth and thinking that government is responsible for the cleaning of the environment, adding that it was a shared responsibility.
Mr Agyekum called on each and every one to show a massive support for the national exercise because it had come to stay.
Osaberima Asare Oduro I, Adeisohene, said chiefs should be given the mandate to punish people who failed to participate in the exercise.
He urged the chiefs and opinion leaders to help in the selection of sites in their communities for the exercise.
