Parties Fund Advocated

A report of the consultative fora in financing political parties and the electoral process held throughout the country has recommended the establishment of a Political Parties’ Fund, backed by legislation.

The state, development partners, corporate bodies and individuals should be encouraged to contribute to the fund, the report said.

Electoral Commission (EC) compiled the report, which was launched in Accra yesterday by the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Papa Owusu Ankomah.

A copy was presented to the Minister by the EC Chairman, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, to be presented to the President, Mr. J. A. Kufuor.

The consultative fora were held from July 2 to August 28 at nine regional centres in the country.

Participants were drawn from various district assemblies, political parties, civil society organizations, traditional authorities and state Institutions including the ministries and the judiciary and the security services.
