Participate in the implementation of NHIS-DCE tells chiefs

Mankranso (Ash), July 23, GNA – Mr Kwaku Obeng Boateng, the Ahafo-Ano South District Chief Executive has appealed to traditional rulers to participate in the implementation of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to ensure its success.

He said their participation in the scheme was important because unlike politicians, their positions as traditional rulers were permanent.

Mr Boateng was opening a one-day seminar on the NHIS for traditional rulers and religious leaders at Mankranso, organised and sponsored by Partners for Health Reform Plus (PHR-Plus) of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

It was aimed at equipping them with the requisite knowledge to be able to promote the NHIS in their communities as well as ensure accountability and fairness in the implementation of the scheme. Mr Boateng said as traditional rulers, they have easier access to the people and could ensure the proper implementation of the scheme and therefore urged them to show keen interest in it.

Mr Joseph Owusu, Ashanti Regional Consultant for PHR-Plus, urged the people to avoid the politicisation of the scheme and instead, patronise it for their own good.

Mr Isaac Lantey, the District Co-ordinator of the NHIS, appealed to the participants and other stakeholders to embrace the scheme and commended PHR-Plus for its assistance.
