Parliamentary aspirants promise to ensure peace in campaigns

Dormaa Ahenkro (B/A), Sept. 8, GNA – Four Parliamentary aspirants, vying for the Dormaa-West seat, have pledged to ensure peace and tranquillity during their campaigns to the 2008 Election. They are Christopher Gbaami of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Kwaku Agyemang Manu of New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawrence Yeboah Kyeremeh of Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) and Vincent Oppong Asamoah of National Democratic Congress (NDC).

They made the pledge at Dormaa Ahenkro, when they outdoored their policies and programmes at a forum jointly organised by Dormaa Municipal Office of National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and Friends of Democracy and Policy Advocate (FODAPA), a community-based Organisation. The one-day event, organised under the theme, “Tolerance for peaceful Elections”, was aimed at ensuring tolerance of divergent views among political party leaders and their followers to ensure peace before, during and after the elections. The aspirants promised to seek local and international assistance to revamp industries to create jobs for the youth in the constituency. They also said they would establishment the MP’s office to be accessed by all constituents irrespective of party affiliation and provide computer laboratories for the youth. Mr. Manu, who is Deputy Minister for Trade, Industry and the President’s Special Initiatives, said his seven years experience in “the visionary leadership of Ghana” had given him the qualities required for the job and appealed to the electorate to vote for him. The NDC aspirant said he would, among other things “sell” the constituency to the outside world instead of waiting for prospective investors to come to the area.

Joseph Kwaku Yeboah, NCCE Municipal Director, called on individuals and organisations to collaborate efforts to avoid violence during the polls. Nana Badu Yeboah, Kyemhene of Dormaa Traditional Council, called on political leaders to be nationalistic and help safeguard the relative peace in the country.
