Parliament urged to pass NYEP Bill

Bolgatanga, Nov 24, GNA – Mr Kojo Kopanamo, the Upper East Regional Coordinator of the NYEP, on Wednesday appealed to Parliament to pass the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) Bill to enable the programme to run effectively.

He told the GNA in an interview that the NYEP was one of the the best programmes to develop the youth yet it is faced with many challenges. Some of these challenges are late release of money for payment of allowances, lack of logistics including means of transport and accommodation for Regional and District coordinators.

He said the challenges were affecting the smooth operation of the programme and appealed to the government to put the necessary structures in place to help address the problems.

Mr Kopanamo cautioned the beneficiaries who had not made their grades in school to work hard to improve them.

“You must start planning now so as not to become a victim of unemployment when the two-year contract ends”. He said the government had put in place an exit plan for the beneficiaries after their two-year period.

He said some would be employed in the security services, health institutions and private sectors and others helped to continue their education depending on their performances. Mr Kopanamo said some of the past beneficiaries had already been helped to exit into other areas and plans were far advanced to help absorb the remaining past beneficiaries into other organizations. 24 Nov 10
