Accra, Jan. 20 GNA – Mr Kenneth Tachie, Clerk of Parliament, announced in London that plans by Ghana’s Parliament would set up an FM Radio Station to facilitate the broadcast of live debates and discussions at the floor of the House. He said the Station to be launched by the Parliamentary Service was in line with the new image Parliament had carved for itself and expressed the hope that the facility would enlist public support.
Mr Tachie in a press statement issued by the Ghana High Commission in London to the GNA said the House was enjoying considerable goodwill and admiration from the comity of nations. He was speaking during a courtesy call on Mr Isaac Osei, Ghana’s High Commissioner to the UK during a brief stopover in London, after representing Ghana at the Commonwealth Speaker’s Conference in Canada.
The Clerk of Parliament said representatives of Parliament at international assignments continued to receive commendations for the manner at which the affairs of House were being tackled. He said such international acclamations should galvanize Members of Parliament to work harder towards the enactment of laws, which should stand the test of time.
Mr Tachie described the performance of Parliament in the past year as impressive and expressed optimism that MPs would continue to be focused and proactive in their duties. He said a Research, Public Affairs and Development Departments had been established to enhance the performance of the Legislature. He expressed the need for sustained education to counteract the growing public misconception about the role of Parliament in the constitutional dispensation.
Mr Osei said the establishment of an FM station would help bring the people closer to Parliament and provide them the opportunity to monitor the activities of their representatives. He said it was the duty of Parliament to enact laws and not to execute development projects and lauded the MPs for their commitment and dedication to duty. Commenting on the 2004 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, Mr Osei urged members of the House to ensure peaceful elections by not inflaming passions with indecent language.
