Parliament to debate controversial CI 78 report

Members of Parliament are expected to debate the controversial CI 78 report which was laid in parliament last Friday by the Subsidiary Legislative Committee.

The CI is to enable the EC create 45 additional constituencies.

A report on the instrument was laid before the House on Friday for debate today.

Parliament sat on Saturday to compensate the loss of a day towards achieving the 21 day maturation period of the CI 78.

Minority MPs are insistent the new CI 78 is error-riddled and must be withdrawn.

The chairman of the committee on Subsidiary Legislation Committee, Kwame Osei Prempeh in an interview with XYZ News said there could be disastrous implications if the majority and the Electoral Commission remain adamant and push the instrument through.

“We can only make recommendations to the House, Parliament cannot force the EC to withdraw, if it fails through then the only option given to Parliament under the constitution is to marshal two thirds majority of Members in Parliament to annul it” .
