Parliament investigates police recruitment scam

Parliament has begun investigations into a recruitment scam that hit the Ghana Police Service over the weekend.

The House initiated the move after the Mr Adagbila Boniface Gambila, MP for Nabdam, Tuesday, during deliberations on the Floor of Parliament drew the attention of the House to the gravity of the matter and its implication on the country’s security.

Mr Ebo Barton-Odro, the First Deputy Speaker informed the House that the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and the Interior had launched investigations into the matter.

He charged the Committee to expedite action on the investigation and present its report to the plenary for the appropriate action to be taken.

Hundreds of prospective recruits at the weekend converged at the various police training schools across the country with letters directing them to report for training.

Some of the applicants are alleged to have paid about GH¢4,000.00 each to the fraudsters in order to gain admission to the police service. The applicants were turned away by the police authorities.

The Committee, after adjournment of proceedings in the House, met a delegation of the Ghana Police Service led by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr Mohammed Alhassan.

A usually reliable source told the GNA that the IGP had assured the committee that the matter was being thoroughly investigated and that a number of persons involved in the scam had been identified and arrested.
