Parliament has given the University of Ghana the all clear to levy “outsiders” who use its roads, tv3network.com has gathered.
This followed a crunch meeting between the University’s authorities and the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Roads and Transport on Thursday, February 6, 2014.
According to sources, the Committee accepted the explanation given by the authorities to charge users of the premier University’s roads but called for the exemption for students.
Students with personal cars have, therefore, been directed to consult the deans of their various halls to formalize the use of cars on campus.
The University began charging between Ghc1 and Ghc3 on February 1, 2014 after it claimed it needed to offset secured loans used to refurbish the roads.
The move was met with public outcry as it came at a time fuel prices and transport fares were increased.
Students, notwithstanding the new exemption privilege, have planned a demonstration against the University’s authorities for by-passing them in the decision-making process.
They will demonstrate on Tuesday, February 11, 2014.
