Parliament has barred the use of voter’s ID cards, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards and drivers’ license as proof of Ghanaian citizenship under the new national identification system.
Also removed as proof of citizenship is the baptismal certificate with only birth certificates and passports guaranteeing one a citizenship in the country.
Persons with the barred identification cards will only be registered unless they provide two relatives, an Assembly member of the area or a Unit Committee Member to testify to officials of National Identification Authority (NIA).
This was contained in the report of the constitutional, legal and parliamentary affairs committee on the National Identity Register (Amendment) bill, 2017.
Speaking to Class news on Friday, November 17, the NIA Executive Secretary, Professor Kenneth Attafuah said the authority is collaborating with the Passport Office, The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to ensure accurate data.
